The Grand Hyatt hosts a luau dinner buffet and show on the lawn looking out on Keoneloa Bay. Doors open at 5:30 and the buffet dinner service begins at 6:00 p.m. During the evening, you’ll discover some Hawaiian cultural traditions, starting with a lei greeting. Food is an important part of the culture as well, and you’ll get to taste kalua pork that’s prepared in an underground oven; fish and other entrees with flavors of Asia and the Pacific; lomi lomi salmon (a relish of salt salmon, tomato, and onion); and of course, poi. Made from taro, a tuber that grows in water-filled paddies, poi is very nutritious, non-allergenic, and very subtle in flavor. Take a bite of kalua pork or lomi salmon with the poi, and it will all meld into a delicious mouthful. Relax in the balmy evening air and enjoy the Polynesian show. The Hawaiian music and hula include nostalgic Hawaiian standards to newer compositions, some of them sassy and others romantic. The dancers perform hula kahiko, a traditional style accompanied by drum or gourd, and hula auana, which are accompanied by singing and instruments. Tahitian dances are done to lilting waltz tempos or to fast drum rhythms.   |
