Sugar Exhibit opens at 6pm. Historic Movie shows at 7:30pm.
“Sweet Memories” of the Sugar Era will be the theme of the 2010 historic movie night, as it moves to its new location at Kukui`ula Village. The documentaries will be shown on a big screen at the center Palm Court outside of Merriman’s starting at 7:30pm. The Plantation Style architecture of Kukui`ula Village offers a beautiful place to immerse yourself in island history and culture, “talk story” with old friends, and make new ones. This is a perfect opportunity to enjoy dinner and a movie on Kauai’s sunny south shore under the stars. In honor of the 25th year of the festival, the Historic Film night will this year be accompanied by a Sugar Exhibit, presented by the Koloa Plantation Days committee. You will have an opportunity to view images and artifacts from the sugar era on site, talk story with those who grew up and lived through Plantation Days. We encourage you to come early, exhibit opens at 6:00pm. Films will be shown after dark, starting at 7:30pm. “Long Sugar” a documentary by Grove Farm, reflects the origins of the Sugar industry, which has it’s roots in Koloa where the first commercial sugar mill began operation 175 years ago at the old Koloa Mill. Bob Schlek of Grove Farm will be here to introduce the film and share his memories of the era. A variety of other pieces will also be shown, capturing the variety of sugar memories up to present day. Hawaii Stream will present a new piece, showing the last cane haul on Kauai in 2009, when the last sugar was harvested, processed and shipped from Kauai by Gay & Robinson just prior to the closure of their sugar operation last year. With the last crop, sugar moves into history bringing you to present time. This evening of sugar memories will be a truly unique event, both educational and heartwarming. Koloa Plantation Days thanks Kukui`ula Village for hosting the evening and we invite residents and visitors to come together. Delicious Dining Choices to catch dinner before the movie: Merriman’s Downstairs Café, Living Foods Market, Bubba Burgers, and Dude Dogs for casual dining. Merriman’s Kauai and Josselin’s Tapas Bar & Grill for fine dining. And for dessert, visit Lappert’s Ice Cream & Coffee and Uncle’s Shave Ice & Smoothies.
